Great coastal towns in Croatia: A travel guide

Croatia has been a firm favourite destination for British holidaymakers for many years. The crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea and its many idyllic Croatian islands –  some relaxing and quiet and others fun packed and lively –  offer something for all tastes.

Dubrovnik and Split are the undoubted showstoppers, two of Europe’s most beautiful and historic towns, but they are not alone. Here are a few other Croatian coastal towns which require, if not demand, your attention.

Rovinj: Venetian and Adriatic charm

The Venetian influence on the Croatian coast is very strong in Rovinj which combines a stunning old town and delightful beaches with miles of cycle routes for the more energetic.

Pula: Ancient Roman heritage

Split is quite rightly famous for the awe-inspiring legacy of the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace which forms the bedrock of the old town, but Pula will also have immense appeal to lovers of antiquity with its perfectly preserved amphitheatre and the incredible Temple of Augustus still in remarkable condition after 2000 years of existence.

Zadar: The sunset capital

With direct flights from the UK, Zadar also combines the charm of its Venetian heritage and Roman remains without the crowds of its better known Croatian sisters. Plus, each night it hosts what is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful sunsets in Europe and the stunning national parks of Plitvice Lakes and Paklenica are only a short drive away.

Rijeka: Habsburg elegance

Rijeka combines elegant Habsburg architecture with a bustling, lively nightlife and one of Europe’s most colourful carnivals in February for those looking for something a little different and fun in the winter months.

Trogir: A UNESCO medieval town

Trogir is one of the loveliest towns in Croatia, situated on an island behind medieval walls its marble streets are a delight and spending the evening in the bars and cafes on its seaside promenade will make for unforgettable summer memories. Trogir is a UNESCO world heritage site and is home to ancient Romanesque churches and elegant Venetian and Baroque buildings all of this and the beautiful beaches of the Trogir Riviera.

Brijuni Islands: The historic archipelago

One of Croatia’s most famous archipelagos is Brijuni National Park, a cluster of 14 islands. The national park offers beautiful landscapes and is where Josip Broz Tito the leader of the former Republic of Yugoslavia had his official residence. The White Villa (Bijela Vila) is definitely worth a visit, and its museum gives a fascinating insight into the life of the old leader.
