Best things to do in Morocco
Morocco has dramatically diverse landscapes offering windswept beaches, the sand dunes of the Sahara and the rugged beauty of the Atlas Mountains. From the beautifully well-preserved medieval city of Fez to the coastal resorts of Agadir, to fantastic shopping and delicious cuisine in Marrakesh, there's something for everyone in Morocco.
A destination that is year-round, with the best times to usually visit in Spring (March to May) or Autumn (September to November) with warm but milder weather.
Here's our tips on what not to miss.
Morocco's coastline
With 3,500 km of coastline Morocco is great for beach lovers with resorts such as Agadir and Essaouira. Morocco benefits from being on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, so visitors are spoilt for choice and can choose between either side.
Agadir's sandy beaches make it one of Morocco's most popular resorts, thanks to its wide shoreline and generally calmer waters. Essaouira, meanwhile, is known for its waterside restaurants and cafés and is an excellent choice for adventurous families.
If you're interested in surfing, Essaouira – often called the "Windy City" – is one of Morocco's must-visit destinations, with consistent Atlantic breezes and a laid-back surf scene.
Whether you're strolling the harbour or heading out on the water, Essaouira's relaxed atmosphere is part of its charm. Spend time exploring the narrow streets of the medina, browsing the souks, and popping into art galleries and independent boutiques.
Ourika Valley in the Atlas Mountains
Just south of Marrakesh is the Atlas Mountains, extending 2,500km across northwestern Africa, spanning Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. This mountain range separates the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline from the Sahara Desert, in the shadows of the mountains is Ourika Valley.
Ourika Valley is well known for its lush green landscapes, terraced fields, ravines, and the snowcapped peaks of the nearby mountains acting as a backdrop. Here you can visit Berber villages, explore local markets, visit the garden of Le Paradis du Safran, or explore one of the walking trails.
Explore the ancient medina of Fez
Located in the north of the country Fez is the second largest city and is known as the cultural capital of Morocco. The city dates back to the 13th century and is one of the Imperial Cities of Morocco that also include Marrakesh, Meknes, and Rabat.
The medina in Fez, or old walled section of the city, called Fez El-Bali was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Here, you can explore the colourful labyrinth of alleyways where you can see traditional artisans making copper pots, leather goods, pottery, and ceramics.
Marvel at the beautiful architecture of former colleges Bou Inania or Al-Attarine Madrasa with their intricate woodwork and tile work. Or visit the oldest university in the world, Al-Quaraouiyine, originally founded as a Mosque in 857-59 and became one of the leading education centres.
Try traditional Moroccan food
No trip to Morocco is complete without sampling its rich and flavourful cuisine. Expect warming spices, slow-cooked dishes, and fresh ingredients across the country. Must-try classics include tagine, a slow braised stew named after its conical clay pot, street food such as msemen (flaky flatbread) and mint tea plays a significant role in Moroccan hospitality.
Shopping in Marrakesh
Exploring the souks of Marrakesh are a must when visiting, and place to pick up unique souvenirs made by local artisans. One of the largest in Marrakesh is Souk Semmarine located in the heart of the Medina and merges with Souk Nejjarine and Souk El-Kebir.
There are many souks dotted throughout the cities each known for a particular craft, from lanterns, leather slippers, pottery, and textiles.
From breezy beach days on the Atlantic coast to mountain scenery and ancient medinas, Morocco packs a lot into one trip. Plan your trip around what you most want to see, leaving room for spontaneous detours, and you'll quickly see why Morocco is a favourite for first-time visitors and returning travellers alike.
