Discover Luxembourg in three days. Historic charm, fairytale castles and a vibrant modern city.
Luxembourg City Break: What to see in three days
Looking for a destination for a weekend city break? Luxembourg is a great choice. In three days, you can enjoy the historic charm, dramatic landscapes and indulgent, rich flavours. With everything located in close proximity and excellent transport links, it's easy to explore both the capital and the countryside without the rush.
Here's our itinerary for your next trip.
Day one: The Historic Capital
Spend your first day soaking up Luxembourg City's historic charm, where medieval ramparts meet elegant palaces and atmospheric squares. Everything in the capital is walkable, making it easy to see major highlights without feeling rushed.
- Wander the UNESCO-listed Old Town
- See the Grand Ducal Palace
- Explore Bock Casemates for iconic views
- Visit Notre Dame Cathedral for Gothic-meets-Renaissance architecture
- Stop off for coffee and pastries in Place Guillaume II
For lunch or an afternoon break, the streets surrounding Place Guillaume II and the Old Town are filled with cafes and bakeries tucked into narrow lanes — ideal for grabbing a bite to eat between sightseeing.
After a day exploring the capital's highlights, you'll be ready to venture into the countryside for another side of Luxembourg.
Day two: Castles and countryside
Your second day takes you beyond the capital, where Luxembourg's landscapes shift from dense forests to storybook villages and hilltop castles. This is the perfect day trip that you can do by bus, car or on an organised tour.
- Visit Vianden Castle — one of the most beautiful castles across Europe
- Stroll through Echternach — Luxembourg's oldest town
- In Vianden, check out the Victor Hugo Museum or visit Echternach's St Willibrord Basilica
- Mullerthal Trail — ideal for hiking and nature photography and often referred to as Luxembourg's 'Little Switzerland.' Although not hikeable in a single afternoon, a short scenic section (such as around the Shiessentümpel waterfall) is well worth it
- Lunch at a local brasserie — in Vianden or Echternach
Returning to the city in the evening gives you the chance to unwind before diving into Luxembourg's modern cultural scene on your final day.
Day three: Culture, modernity and cuisine
On your final day immerse yourself in the city's modern side where cutting-edge architecture meets riverside charm. Luxembourg City's modern districts sit just minutes from its most picturesque neighbourhoods, making it easy to admire the views, explore museums and enjoy a relaxed evening atmosphere before heading home.
- Admire Kirchberg Plateau's architecture and public art
- Explore Mudam — the Museum of Modern Art
- Pfaffenthal panoramic elevator — take a ride for incredible views over the city
- Grund district — the place to be for riverside bars surrounded by charming, cobbled streets
With its mix of history, scenery, and contemporary culture, Luxembourg makes for a perfect long-weekend escape.
