Unique places to visit in Greece
Greece is one of the most popular overseas destinations for UK holidaymakers offering stunning scenery and beaches, delicious healthy food and some of the most welcoming people in the world. The majority of us head to the popular islands such as Crete, Corfu, Mykonos, Rhodes and Zante all of which are well worth a visit, but that’s not all this amazing country has to offer.
Ancient Mycenae: A historical gem
Lovers of history will be in seventh heaven on a visit to the Peloponnese in the south of the country. There are so many archaeological sites to see but one of the most evocative is the hillside town of Mycenae, home to Agammemnon the leader of the Greeks in the war against Troy. From the moment you walk through its famous Lion gate and explore the otherworldly chamber tombs which dot the site you will feel transported back to the age of heroes.
Vergina: Royal treasures and fantastic cuisine
In the north of the country not far from Greece’s second city Thessaloniki is the jaw dropping site of Vergina. This was the burial site of Alexander the Great’s Father, Phillip II and excavation of the site rivalled the excitement of discovering Tutankhamun tomb. Perhaps the most stunning among the Vergina royal tombs is a wreath of incredibly realistic oak leaves made from solid gold and the whole site is an unforgettable experience. Once you’ve finished sightseeing you can also have lunch in one of the great value restaurants in the neighbouring village.
Nafplio: Greece's historic first capital
The town of Napflio has a very special place in the heart of the Greek people being chosen as the first capital of Greece in the 19th century following its independence from Turkey. The city has lovely houses, many excellent bars and restaurants and a Venetian castle. A short walk from the town along a path lined with pine trees are a pair of beaches and the views over the bay as you make your way for a swim are magical.
Olimpiada: A family-friendly resort
If you are looking for a family friendly holiday in Greece with a dash of history head to the village of Olimpiada in the region of Halkidiki. It has a very pretty location, on a gently sloping bay and a short drive away there are a number of impressive sandy beaches. The town has a range of high-quality, good value restaurants, perfect for a week’s break. Right next to the resort is the ancient town of Stagira, birthplace of Aristotle, Greece's most famous philosopher. Unlike many archaeological sites, Stagira is not widely known, so if you’re lucky you may have this place to yourself.
Kavala: The byzantine coastal beauty
Fancy a city break with a difference? Head to the Byzantine city of Kavala. The historic district of Panagia is full of mansions with flower laden wooden balconies and cobbled courtyards. Kavala is overlooked by a fortress and the town’s signature landmark is the 270m long Kamares aqueduct, but it also has some fun beaches to visit. It’s easy to access from the UK with direct flights to Thessaloniki which is a short drive away.
